Yes, women have made advances in legal equality and wage equality (sometimes in a two steps forward, one step backward pattern), but many still look outside themselves for approval or direction. Using quotes pulled from actual women's magazines, cookbooks, and marriage-advice manuals of the era, Baker paints a quaint and almost laughable picture of the advice being peddled to 50's women yet a careful reading has to bring up the question of whether all that much has changed. When a young bride moves to a small Wisconsin town in the 1950s, she becomes obsessed with the vacant mansion that once belonged to the town's most prominent family.īaker uses the character's fascination with the house to tell the story of its inhabitants from 1897, when another young bride arrived on the scene, moving through the generations as they grow up and deal with two world wars, the family's changing fortunes, and the restrictive view of women prevalent in the era.

Andrew Barriger, author of Finding FaithĪdrien English is different. If you're looking for a good mystery where there are gay characters but their sexual orientation isn't the focus of the book, then this is the story for you. I found the pace of the "reveal" to be very well timed and thoroughly enjoyed this book. A mystery solved too quickly means the author was sloppy with his clues, and a mystery with a surprise ending often means the author just tricked the reader. My all-time barometer for a mystery is whether I can solve it, but not too quickly. I may have been at a slight disadvantage by starting with the second Adrien English book, rather than the first, but the characters still seemed well developed and understandable. Even at critical moments, the story remains witty and entertaining. Josh Lanyon has a superb grasp of language and plays subtle word games throughout this first-person narrative. The story just takes off from there and never stops. He arrives to find a dead body in the middle of the driveway and no clue as to the cause. The story starts with the main character, a bookseller from LA, traveling to his grandmother's old ranch in the Sierra Nevadas. What a great read! I listened to the audiobook narrated by Johanna Parker, who is fantastic. I love a mystery that keeps me on my toes. There were some great curve balls that I never expected. Such fun! The mystery is many layered, which keeps you guessing at times. I love the whole crazy dynamic of the town of Mudbug. It is mostly smooth, but there are times it gets jumpy. The narrative is mixed between the leads and supporting cast. It is also not a squeaky clean romance, it has a touch of steam but not the uber hawt details. There are lots of moments to build the relationship, but it isn't all hearts and flowers. The romance is ore subtle, not a sweet courtship. Fortunately, he shows true character later and ends up deserving his spot in his gal's heart. I had moments where I felt he wasn't good enough for Maryse. Luc is yummy, he is a bit of a player and you might find him a bit questionable. I love her analytical mind and how she tries to apply logic to the chaos. You really feel for her situation with the disastrous mother in law ghost. She is sassy yet endearing at the same time. Get ready for an eccentric read! Maryse is such a great character. It is a really fun read with such quirky and engaging characters. This is book one in the series, setting up the ghost/cozy mystery/contempo romance.
